In this class we work on drills that include taconeo (footwork), brazeo (arm/hand movement technique), vueltas (turns), palmas (hand clapping) and castanuelas (castanets). In addition we will work on choreography variations to better understand the different types of flamenco dance movement. Castanets are required for this class. This class is very important if you want to participate and be properly prepared for the choreography classes and performances.
Every year La Tania Baile Flamenco provides performance opportunities for the students. The theatre presentations usually take place at the Palace of Fine Arts or the Cowell Theatre as part of City Dance Onstage. We will be offering two performance opportunites two times a year once in the spring time, April or May and once in December. For these shows the choreographies are geared towards ensemble work and have a theatrical approach thus giving the students the opportunity to develope performance skills and to showcase the work that has been accomplished in their dance training.
BATA DE COLA
A Bata de Cola is a long train dress used in flamenco dance. Only intermediate or advanced levels should take this class. The dancer must have adequate flamenco dance training since another element is being added thus making it more difficult to master the dance in a bata de cola. You must own a bata de cola to take this class and if you want to participate in the performance the bata de cola must be red. You can purchase locally from Sketsamoda at: www.sketsamoda.com. Once a year there will be a performance in a theatre with the bata de cola.
BULERIAS/TANGOS POR FIESTA
Bulerías & tangos por fiesta are festive type of dances. They continue to be the highlight of fiestas or juergas (celebrations). These classes develop improvisational skills and a good sense of flamenco style. Classes are designed to train dancers to interact with the guitarist and singer in a spontaneous way. Steps and structure are taught so the dancers have a base to work off. Eventually, the students learn how to organize their own dance on the spot and improvise interpreting the cante (song). This gives the students the skills to really listen to the guitar and singing, which will also be useful for an overall understanding of how this art form works in general. A flamenco dancer must always have bulerías and tangos in their repertoire. This class is suited for advanced beginners, intermediate and advanced students.
This class is offered as a specialty class and is not an ongoing class. The purpose of this class is to give the opportunity for the student to work on solo dancing. Students can work on a small section of a dance (to get used to executing on their own) or a full dance for those that are more prepared and need to practice and learn the correct execution with the compas (rhythm) and to communicate clearly the cues with the singer and guitarist. Palmas (hand clapping) will also be taught and how to accompany dancers.
